You will receive Rhododendron Canescens, Piedmont Native Azalea, currently growing in a 1 gallon pot, well-rooted and ready for planting directly in your garden.

Rhododendron canescens, the Piedmont Azalea or Florida Pinxter Azalea, is a beautiful native species, blooming in early spring before leafing out. The fragrant flowers are up to 1½ inches across, and come in shades of pink to white with usually no blotch. The stamens are quite long, usually twice as long as the tube. Although typically considered a southern species, R. canescens is a hardy shrub that deserves wider landscape use. The 4 to 5 foot plant makes a spectacular spring show since the flowers open before the leaves have expanded.

Rhododendron canescens has several common names:
Piedmont Azalea because Piedmont means "foot of mountain" where this species typically is found.
Hoary or Wooly Azalea after the glandular hairs in the tubes of the flowers, these hairs lacking in the similar-looking Pinxter Azalea (R. periclymenoides, formerly R. nudiflorum).
Florida Pinxster or Sweet Pinxster because it resembles R. periclymenoides both of which are usually pink, though white & yellow variants exist.
Sweet Mountain Azalea
Wild or Bush Honeysuckle because its nectar attracts hummingbirds as reliably as do true honeysuckles; their sweet scent can be detected, honeysuckle-like, from a great distance; & when the truss's blooms are not yet fully opened they even look a little bit like honeysuckle blossoms.
And occasionally called Swamp Azalea because it tolerates more wetness than the majority of azaleas.

Hardiness: USDA Zones 5-9.

General Planting Recommendations for Native Azaleas:

Soil: All azaleas prefer well-drained soil, so I suggest you amend the soil for drainage, especially if your soil is clay. Azaleas prefer an acid soil.

Light: Native azaleas usually occur in the filtered light beneath large trees near stream banks, but will grow in full sun when water is adequate. They perhaps will bloom more profusely in full sun.

Water: Native azaleas are quite drought tolerant once established, however, water weekly the first year or two, as the plant grows in to its new environment. Also, the bloom buds are formed during late summer on the early blooming varieties, and if your area is prone to a late summer-early fall drought, pay attention to those weekly waterings, so you won’t miss out on your fragrant spring blooms!
