You will receive Rhododendron Viscosum, also known as Swamp Azalea or Swamp Honeysuckle, currently growing in a 1 gallon pot, well-rooted and ready for planting directly in your garden.

Rhododendron viscosum, Swamp Azalea, is a low growing shrub with white to pink flowers appearing after the leaves. Twigs are pubescent. Flowers are usually white, fragrant, spicy scented, in clusters. These plants will usually grow taller near streams. Blooms a little later than the other native azaleas, usually in late May and June.Native Azaleas are deciduous plants native to the Eastern United States. Most of them have fragrant flowers and they come in a variety of flower colors including yellow. The native deciduous azaleas are difficult to propagate from cuttings, so they are usually produced from seed. The native azaleas don’t seem to be bothered by any insect or disease problem. R. canescens and R. austrinum flower in April before they leaf out and R. prunifolium blooms in August-September. The other species bloom between these times.

Hardiness: USDA Zones 4-9.

Mature Size: Up to 8 feet in height and width.

Soil: Moist to damp soil preferred—not as drought tolerant as other varieties.

General Planting Recommendations for Native Azaleas:

Soil: Most azaleas prefer well-drained soil, so I suggest you amend the soil for drainage, especially if your soil is clay. Azaleas prefer an acid soil.

Light: Native azaleas usually occur in the filtered light beneath large trees near stream banks, but will grow in full sun when water is adequate. They perhaps will bloom more profusely in full sun.

Water: Native azaleas are quite drought tolerant once established, however, water weekly the first year or two, as the plant grows in to its new environment. Also, the blooms buds are formed during late summer on the early blooming varieties, and if your area is prone to a late summer-early fall drought, pay attention to those weekly waterings, so you won’t miss out on your fragrant spring blooms!
