You will receive Rhododendron Alabamense, Alabama Azalea, currently growing in a 1 gallon pot, well-rooted and ready for planting directly in your garden.

Showy, fragrant, snow-white blooms with a prominent yellow blotch in mid-spring--the flowers have a distinct lemon-spice fragrance and measure up to 1.5 inches across. This plant grows naturally in north central Alabama and western to central Georgia and South Carolina. Most often found in the dry areas of East Alabama, but is rarely seen.
Blooms: White, perfect (exerted stamens), trumpet shaped flowers in terminal clusters that bloom just after Rhododendron austrinum and Rhododendron canescens (early to late April). More hybridization = more pink flowers. Have a yellow blotch on the petal. Distinct lemon fragrance.
Growth Habit: Grows 3' to 5' tall in clumps. Spreads by stolons.
Native to dry areas in eastern Alabama.
Very rare. Usually hard to find in the wild.
Drought tolerant.
Hardiness: USDA Zones 7-9.

R. alabamense is low to medium in height and spreads by underground stems or stolons. It propagates with relative ease from soft wood cuttings and makes a delightful landscape plant.

The American Native Azaleas are deciduous, meaning they lose their leaves for the winter. This defoliation begins quite early in fall, depending on the climate conditions and the variety. Rhododendron austrinum often begins losing leaves as early as August and September, but more than makes up for it when it begins opening the fragrant blossoms as early as the beginning of March.
